Sometimes you have to Share...

So...it happened. A REALLY BIG change...

I've been with my Uncle and Auntie all this time with no real competition. We were good. We'd go for walks, play in the snow, walk through the forest and have leaves crunch under our paws. But now...now it's different. There's something else around...

December 18, 2018 my Uncle and Auntie had a baby pup, I mean boy, named Jones Richard Money. Their lives have changed so much and they love him SO much! But I needed to be introduced. Our good not-so-furry friends looked after me while Uncle and Auntie were at the hospital. When the little guy was born, they took a blanket of his from the hospital and brought it to me so I could smell it - they say this is a good first-introduction for me. I can get a lot from a smell of something...my sense of smell is still pretty good...and I liked what I smelled! They also kept telling me this word, 'Baby'. I hadn't heard this word before at home. And now, I hear it all the time!

Well, The Day came: Jones Richard Money, aka The New Pup, came home. They settled in upstairs and then Uncle came to get me. I thanked my caregivers and we got in the car to come home. I knew something was different as soon as I got in the car. The smell of that blanket they gave me with this word 'Baby' smelled like the car. Something was very different!

When we reached home, I was very excited. I knew there was something different. I couldn't wait to see...

I was on a leash - Uncle just wanted to be extra-careful. It's all in tone and gesture with me. You react with a harsh tone, I'll react; you are calm, I'm calm. So...knowing me well, Uncle made sure that his demeanour was calm, but I could tell he was also excited. I hadn't seen Auntie yet so I was super-excited to see her too! We came upstairs and Uncle opened the door to the bedroom and there they were! Auntie and this new (pup) Baby. I didn't know what it was at first, but I knew that Uncle and Auntie really loved him...with Auntie's hand very close by as I jumped on the bed. This 'Baby Pup' smelled different. He smelled sweet.

I sniffed his head a fair bit and even gave a little kiss. He was going to stick around for a while, I thought. He smelled a bit like Uncle and Auntie. Then I got it!

Jones is their new puppy!

Once I got that, there had to be some determining where I fit in with this new pack. I haven't really been 'pack leader' all this time, but I was a part of the family. What would happen with this new addition? How would I be accepted in all of this?

Well, Uncle and Auntie still have me on the bed at night (which I've been super-dog happy about!) so not a whole lot has changed. There's a bit of a pecking-order when it comes to dinner time now as well as morning walks. Uncle makes sure Puppy-Jones is ok before he takes me out in the mornings. Auntie does a lot with the pup so it's a bit harder for play time, but I know they still love me.

Sometimes you have to share...and I think I'm pretty good at it. But if you show up unannounced and I don't know you very well, I'm right there if you're close to the new puppy. One thing I do know - this puppy is Uncle and Auntie's and I would NEVER want anything to happen to him...so I'm keeping a pretty close eye whenever strange people are around.

I've got it that it's my job to protect and love this little one. With a few kisses here and there, we'll be just fine. I can't wait til the little guy gets a bit bigger and we can go for walks in the park, just he and I. That'd be a lot of fun!

Until then, I'll continue to share Uncle and Auntie with him. He's a pretty good pup. He doesn't bark, I mean cry, too much either, so he's a real blessing! (just like me!)

I've been doin' pretty good at this sharin' thing. I dunno...maybe we can we all do a little better at sharing. I know I can.

Well...that's all for now, folks! I hear the little guy rustling. That means feeding time!

Until next time...
